Although some people can just run and let their thoughts wander for hours, my type A personality most often requires that I find ways to fill the time that is an inherent part of marathon training During the course of my training cycles, people have asked me what the heck I think during 2 hour plus runs, so here it is.
Sometimes I just let my mind wander and run with no music (rare, but it happens).
Most times I listen to a mix of Jillian Michaels podcasts, “Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me” (yes I laugh out loud while running) and music.
Other times friends are nice enough to join me and we just chat.
On Friday, I did the longest run in my training cycle and decided that I wanted a change, so I listened to my first audio book-get ready for a literary masterpiece-“Something Borrowed” by Emily Giffin.
If you couldn’t tell by the powder pink cover, this is pure and unadulterated chick lit, but hey, the price was right and I didn’t want anything too cerebral for my long run. The fact that they made a movie version starring Kate Hudson solidified this book as the perfect fit for a long run.
This trailer sums it up well, but the book is about two lifelong friends Rachel, the nerdy yet cute lawyer, and Darcy, the outgoing and beautiful (yet self involved) and their relationship leading up to Darcy’s wedding to her charming and handsome husband Dex. Or should I say the illicit relationship that Rachel starts with Dex-oh snap!
I still haven’t finished it yet, but this book provided hours (literally) of entertainment during my 20 milers and I continued to chip away at it on my five miler yesterday.
So there’s a glimpse into what goes through my mind during those long runs.
What do you think about during long training runs?0
