TRX Training Center Trip

On Saturday, my friend Maddie and I decided to try out a TRX circuit class.

When we arrived at the doors of the TRX Headquarters (we’re official like that), the manager Miguel greeted us with “Are you ladies here to get Jamel’ed?”. ¬†We knew we were in for a serious workout.

At this point in the post, a few questions might be racing through your head, including “What is TRX and where are these top secret headquarters” and “What the heck does it mean to get “Jamel’ed?”

Well, first things first.

TRX Headquarters

TRX Training is a suspension based training system developed by Navy SEALS to simultaneously¬†develop strength, balance, flexibility and core stability. TRX Training is unique because you use your own bodyweight to increase each exercise’s level of difficulty. The TRX Training Center, the only one of its kind in the entire world, is conveniently located about 15 minutes from my apartment in San Francisco, so I decided it was about time I stopped by for a class.

Before the class, we took a quick tour.

The TRX Training Center consists of a downstairs training area, which is where the first TRX classes were originally developed and where we took our class.

Upstairs is home to a brand new 3000 square foot training space-

complete with an AWESOME sign.

Obviously a before shot.

After the tour, we headed downstairs to meet our instructor Jamel -

Welcome to the pain cave ladies.

and quickly figured out what it meant to get Jamel’ed.

Class started out with jumping jacks and some calisthenics like high knees-completely sane and rational. From there, things escalated…quickly. We went from quaint exercises like jumping jacks to doing medicine ball throws, TRX side lunges with one legged hops and plie pulses with basketball jumps. There were a few moments where I thought I was going to vomit and at one point I feared for my life when I looked over at Maddie and saw the utter hatred she had for me in her eyes, but Jamel kept us going through it all. He managed to be simultaneously encouraging, intimidating and enthusiastic and threw out some choice phrases for inspiration. Some of my favorites?

  • SLAM THAT BALL HARDER THAN A TEQUILA SHOT!
  • Throw it like somebody just stole your milk money!
  • Don’t look at the ground. There’s nothing on it to see but your sweat.
  • Tighten those glutes and thighs..make ‘em like apples…not applesauce.

The 55 minute workout flew by and we both felt very hardcore after we were done. Shakily standing outside drenched in sweat after the class, we both agreed that this workout was a blast. It was one of the most challenging, yet fun, workouts we’ve done in a long time. Two days later and I’m still sore-I’ll definitely be coming back for more.
