Hi everyone! It’s time for another edition of “Ask a Blogger”!
Hey! I am Ali from Food, Fitness, Fashion. I am 28 years old living in Boston, MA with my husband Adam and doxie Oscar. I have been blogging for almost 2 and a half years. I am currently finishing up my Master’s in Education to be a School Counselor. I intern part-time at a local High School as a School Counseling intern and also do social media and web consulting part-time as well as function coordination part-time. I love running and just completed my first marathon 10/16/11. I am also a Crossfit junkie. I find that running and Crossfit are so fun and different in so many ways that it always keeps me from getting bored. I have a new goal of adding yoga practice to my fitness routine (let’s see how that goes). Getting Healthy With Style (under 5 words!!! Whoop Whoop!)
Favorite post? Least favorite post?
My favorite post so far would have to be my marathon post. There are a few posts I really dislike from when I first started blogging. They just weren’t all that good, I will still trying to figure out who I was a a blogger.
Why did you start blogging?
After losing 35 pounds and keeping it off, I figured that there were other people out there like me looking for “answers” on how to do this healthfully and I wanted to share what worked for me to help or inspire people to take those first few steps toward a healthier lifestyle.
How do you keep coming up with new content that will keep your readers interested?
I must admit, it isn’t always easy. I have some days where my creativity it TOTALLY shot! But it often times comes back if I wait for it. When I am feeling super creative, I jot ideas down in a notebook so that I can refer to them when I am feeling less creative.
What has been the best part of being a blogger?
I love sharing my life! I have also met a lot of friends through blogging, which is awesome. I love being able to look back at things I have done. I also really enjoy hearing from readers and other bloggers through e-mail, tweets and comments. I have received so much encouragement and support from readers and other bloggers
The worst (if you have one)?
Eh- putting yourself out there so often opens you up to scrutiny. It is par for the course, most days I am fine with it and at times appreciate that people disagree with me or don’t love what I am doing. Some days though, if I am in a certain mood- it can affect me.
What has been the most surprising/unexpected part of being a blogger?
I think the most unexpected thing is that people really enjoy my blog and that people would recognize me when I am out doing things. I love when I meet other bloggers or readers when I am out and about! That is so freakin’ cool to me!
Most memorable blogging moment or biggest blogging achievement?
This is going to sound so dumb- but every time I write a post that touches someone whether it is because they understand where I am coming from or they completely disagree with me that is an achievement.
Any advice to those who want to start their own blog?
I say go for it! It is so fun. Just roll with the punches, you will eventually find your voice. Make sure you have fun with it, it will come through in your writing.
Aside from blogging and breaking a sweat, what do you like to do in your free time?
Drink? LOL- kidding (kinda). I like spending time with my family, we are really close. I love to travel, but right now we don’t have the budget for it. I also love to read. Since I have been in grad school though reading for fun has taken a backseat to text books! BOOOOO! Once May comes, I will be back to reading for pleasure. Oh and I LOVE to shop. I really see fashion as art and a form for self-expression.
Do you have a mantra? This could be anything from a mantra that gets you through tough workouts to a mantra that gets you through tough life situations.
I have a bunch, ready? “I am not afraid, I was born to do this.” (that got me through my marathon). “I can give more, I can dig deeper.” When running up hills I sing to myself in my head (ok and sometimes out loud) “This Hill Is Bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S” – I don’t know why, but it works. “One foot in front of the other.”
What’s one food that you couldn’t live without? Pickles.
What’s your favorite way to break a sweat? Running or Crossfit- it’s a tie.
Favorite song to work out to?
“One Moment in Time” -Whitney Houston. I know, geeky and not typical. Don’t judge me!
Any weird pre-race superstitions?
A few: If I don’t like my number, I am certain the race is doomed. I need to poop before I get to the start line or I panic (TMI?). If I am not running with Adam, I need to call him before the race starts and he needs to tell me “Break a leg.”
What are some of your favorite blogs?
Oh goodness! I love so many! Not just Healthy Living Blogs either. I am totally into decorating and renovation blogs now since my husband and I are renovating our house.
What is one moment where you totally and completely surprised yourself? This could be anything from the way you responded to a tough situation to kicking butt in a race.
I was shocked at how good I felt running my marathon, I am still convinced feeling that good for 26.2 miles is not normal. I think it is a testament to my commitment to my training.
Anything else we should know about you or your blog?!
Let’s see: I am loud, brutally honest (in a loving way) and I swear a lot, but you ALWAYS know where you stand with me. I think everything my dog does is hilarious even if he is being bad or obnoxious, he can do no wrong in my eyes. My dad is my hero. I have a huge coffee addiction. I never do laundry. I always take jokes one step too far. The weather effects my mood more than it should. And I like pickles on my spaghetti. Yup, that about sums it up :)0
